BaBeaver - Code Shell Hunter - Part 03

Photobucket Hi, there. Welcome to part 3 of BaBeaver – Code Shell Hunter. Following the previous 2 posts, I will continue on the early days of BaBeaver and Allo.
When developping the characters, I made several strips in French in a normal standard strip format. I took the dimensions of another strip that I like a lot, “Foxtrot” and just followed them as guidance. And it was OK. And it was all… 3 strips in colors, straight panel lines… no more…
Then they contacted me again to propose the daily strips to the free Metro Newspaper. Now, you need to imagine that there has been a time lapse of more than 8 months ( if memory serves well ) between the end of the freelance and this contact. In the meantime, I found a steady job, so I have to ask my supervisors if it was OK for me to do it. Luckily, they were fine with it. I sent them the equivalent of one week worth of strips, again in the standard format but all rough and off model, just to know their opinions on the ideas. I had to train myself to draw again those characters after so long. I was quite horrified when they sent them back in color, asking me to validate them before sending them to the newspaper! For them, it was apparently OK for the quality of the graphics as it was! Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance and time to redraw every single strip in a more final version, as they didn’t have the time to do the colors on them anyway. So, the first time I got a comic strip published, it was actually some rough stuff that I was totally ashamed of. But, it was not all… To add to my frustration, the newspaper published the first strip normally, but for the second on they rearranged the format to make it enter into a square! I was told that it was due to the fact that it was more easy for them to sell some ad spaces around.
Starting the following week worth of comics, I decided to take more controls on the whole thing. I wanted something in the continuity of the very first 3 strips and it was something totally different. I started to work into the square dimension and very quickly I discovered that it was quite confortable to work with: it looked closer to a normal comics book page than a comic strip ( and accessorly, it looked like some pcoket Mickey Mouse or Pif Pocket monthly magazines that I read when I was younger! ). Also, on the graphics and the stories, I just sent them the final versions. I was quite free on the topics and never had any complains. That’s it for this time. Enjoy the 5 new strips at the bottom of the French version of this post. See you next post.

BaBeaver - Code Shell hunter - Part 02

Photobucket Here goes the second part of BaBeaver - Code Shell Hunter. Following my previous post, I thought about it and decided to go for a little behind the scenes kind of series of posts, one bit at a time. Today: the creation of BaBeaver. BaBeaver was created in early 2004 when I was freelancing for a company based in HK. They asked me to come up with a pair of animals, which would both not be very common in comics book ( like cats, dogs and mice ). So I proposed several options, emphasizing on a beaver and a snail. They wanted to market it strongly on the fact that it was created by a French ( your truly! ). If you go to the website, in the products they have made of it, you can clearly see that the dialogues are in French. Now, regarding the name of BaBeaver, originally, he was supposed to be much much younger, a baby ( he even had diapers at some point in the development! ) and so, here comes the name: baby + beaver = BaBeaver. For his little snail friend, for a long time, I just wanted to call him "snail". The character was there from the beginning but I considered more like a supporting character than a main one. And then, he grew on me. And I can say that I prefer him to BaBeaver. And to the point that in that story published here, he is very important. The name of "Allo"... not from me! They contacted me between the time I completed the development of the characters and starting the comic strips gig and mentioned to me that they decided to call him that way because it sounded French! I was a little bit surprised, but hey... this is their license! So, that's how BaBeaver and Allo were born, somewhere in Hong Kong, a little bit over a 2 months time period. Now, jump to the bottom of the post and enjoy the second part ( actually the second week worth of strips ! ). See you next post!

). A bientôt, au prochain billet.

BaBeaver - Code Shell Hunter - Part 01

Photobucket A couple of years ago, I created this character, BaBeaver, and his snail friend, Allo for a Hong Kong based company. They asked me at that time to do a daily strip to run in the Metro Newspaper. So every Saturdays and Sundays, I would work on it, 5 pages at a time from scratch, doing the script and the drawing and sending the files to the company. Overthere, there was someone to do the coloring and if there was some time left they would do the modifications I would request ( not all the time! ). it was a "fun exercice"!
And here is the first part of one story. More to come in coming posts.

Be proud to be Chinese... Soyez fiers d'être chinois...

Photobucket It was everywhere in China and Chinese provinces. Monday, 2:28 PM, one week after the earthquake. My thoughts are with you, guys.

Photobucket The first 2 are some animations testing GIFS I have made recently for work using Photoshop and then Image Ready. My boss was kind enough to let me put them here (Thank you Alan!). Thanksfully, I didn't need to be on model... and man, that's a long time I haven't made some stuff like that!
The other 2 are me playing with Thomas, the son of a friend (Christian) and Eric, another Frenchman. This was this week-end, during the birthday party of Clémence (daughter of Christian) in Ma On Shan.

I won !... J'ai gagné !

Photobucket

Photobucket At laaaaaaaaaast !... I won ! More than a year ago, during my business trip to visit Pixar in the USA, I bought that extremely addictive game " Luxor ". It is very simple and yet, very complicated. Anyway, several weeks ago - and after a year on it during my lunch breaks - I succeeded to make it up to the end of the game... but I forgot to do a screen capture as a souvenir! So I decided to start over, even if I had to take another year for it ! i guess I am becoming better at it! Today I succeeded again ! I think it is time for me to put the game to rest and to move on! But YEAH ME !

Photobucket Enfiiiiiiin !

Blast from the past... le choc du passé...

Photobucket

Photobucket Argh. Wingo - that I thought up to now to be a good friend - just released this old photo of me circa 1995. He sent this to all my colleagues at the office! And of course, I will have to expect the usual suffering for the days to come such as... "how come you are so ugly now when you were so handsome before?" or the other blackmails that I know some people will try to do!
Not that I am that kind of person to be offended so easily, but I now hesitate on the most painful way of eternal suffering for him. Any advise welcome!

Photobucket Noooooooon !
