Something new from old stuff... Faire du neuf avec du vieux...

Photobucket Below , you can see something made a long time ago ( 16 years ago ). A friend and I made a series of 20 comic strips for a contest for a newspaper in France. It was about a young guy doing a part-time job as a kid guardian ( sorry, I don't know what is the name in English )in a school during lunch time. This was based on my cousin's own experience, even if we made up all the stories. I was just the writer ... and the letterer. Turalo was the cartoonist ( look at the signature, he changed his artist's name since then !). We didn't win and the whole thing was lost for years...

Photobucket

Photobucket ...Until recently! My cousin found this somewhere in a box and decided to send the whole set to me through the web. When I looked at it, I was surprised: it aged pretty badly. Some gags were OK, but some others, not so much. No wonder we didn't won anything! Just for the fun, I decided to start revamping the first strip. And so, below is the new version, in an all new colorful way!...

Photobucket

Photobucket So, if you like it, there will be more! And, er... you want to know something sad about it? Well, look at the photo below. It is a very recent one. Yep ! The same Batman T-shirt ! And I swear, I have a wardrobe full of other clothes!

Delphine's first painting... La première peinture de Delphine...

Photobucket

Photobucket Some times ago, my little girl started to take painting lessons at a little gallery in the shopping mall next to our residence. After 3 lessons, here is her first painting. Yes, I am a proud daddy. This painting is now in France, at her Godfather's place. But I have a copy as my computer's wallpaper at the office.

Dédé the frog... Dédé la grenouille...

Photobucket

Photobucket Finally I can write about it. Several months ago, I was contacted by The French Section of The Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. They wanted me to create a character for them. They have the idea of a cute little frog (you know, it is kind of a symbol of the French people... because a lot of French like to eat frog legs!) and were looking for an illustrator with a French touch. So I created several frogs, and then we narrowed down the selection in 3 rounds. When the choice was made, I did the turn around, selected the colors for the character. Then, as you can see upper, a friend of mine did a 3D version of it. After, the ladies in charge of the department contacted a manufacturer to do a sculpture from it, thanks to the 3D model, for a little mobile phone decoration. And so, I am proud to be able to present you Dédé the frog.

They also asked me to do Dédé in various activities. There will be more coming, and as soon as it is available online I will put the link to their website on the links list somewhere on the right.

Photobucket

Photobucket Some times ago, I was asked as a favor to illustrate a poem. This is something I usually decline. I am not good at all at that exercice and a huge subjective factor makes it difficult to please the one who wrote the poem. On top of that, there were further troubles like the existing person I don't know as source of inspiration, to do a portrait ( when you see how it is bad with the caricatures!) and more ! At first I refused without really refusing ( I know, I know, it is MY problem !), using the usual "maybe, if I have time" sort of excuse. But after the person contacted me other and other again, I felt like I didn't really have a choice: I had to do it. By the way, what you see is not the entire piece, just the drawing part, and even this part had some alterations (yes, the photo in the last panel is not supposed to be white, among other stuff!). It took me a great deal of time to just know how and where to start, I had no clue on the direction I wold go. Then, I tried to do a portrait, but half way into it, I really wasn't satisfy with it at all! So, I thought again and again! Then, one day ( actually, it was at night in the bus bringing me back after work! ), I got my idea: for the portrait, I will trick by using photoshop on an existing photo and for the drawing part I would try to illustrate it the way a young 16/17 years old kid would do, with some kind of uncertainty in the lines or what he want to tell so he follows the text for a while and then digress totally. It was about a fresh new love, a young one so it fitted. To get inspired by the text AND use some of the sentences of the poem to illustrate it, I would not be going too much away... Wrong ! After a while, it started to look like a short story in comics, but because of the "artistic" directions I was setting myself into it, it just looked like a series of non-sense ( I know, some may argue that It still does that ! )pictures. It had to tell a story ( kinda ! ) so I trimmed down a lot and succeed to contain it in those few panels. I was not satisfied with the result and I am still not but given the time and the efforts I could spend on it, it ended up this way. Do I need to mention that I did it for free during my spare time, when I actually am paid to do that kind of things? Of course the result would be different if I was paid for that... there would be none to see: I would have decline it firmly!

It has a happy ending, at least for me: the person who asked for it was satisfied with the job ! It is more important, no?

So yeah, not a big fan of poem illustration jobs.

Old drawing... Vieux dessin...

Photobucket

Photobucket Look what I found recently in my old stuff! Look at the date in the signature ! So long time ago! This was made when I was still in the Fine Arts School of Angoulème in France. I have totally forgotten why and how I did this, but I do remember I did it entirely with inks ( with a light pencil base ). I do remember I was trying different ways of coloring, inking, drawing... IT was good time. And it my memory serves me well, it was the first time I was in my own appartment all by myself.
Man, I feel old !

Do You Do You Do You Saint-Tropez ?

Photobucket

Photobucket Aaaah, almost back to normal. Missed me? Well, here is a caricature of one of my favorite French actors (yeah, I am into caricature stuff at the moment, trying to improve the likeness in my drawings). His name is Louis de Funès. He died many years ago. He was famous for his role in " the Gendarme of Saint-Tropez " series of films, among many many other films.
The drawing itself took a lot of time, as the face of de Funès is both very caricatural and difficult to catch. I made a lot of drawing before this one. I also went to look how some good artists did his caricature. And at the end, I am not even sure it looks OK. What do you think? If you don't know the actor, just google his name.

The Trip - Day 04... Le Voyage - Jour 04...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket Finally, the last day of the trip. Luckily enough, we were able to manage all the meetings on Thursday. As we had to leave the hotel in the morning, we decided to go to the Universal Studios Park... it was so close ! It was a lot of fun. I saw a lot of stuff. Doing a list will take too long, and you know it's just rides and attractions but to see the Hotel from " Psycho ", the De Lorean car from "Back to the Future", it was something.
Then, in the evening, we went to suburb Los Angeles to buy some stuff for the company. The taxi took forever to come and pick up us from there to the hotel, to the point I started to be worried that we would miss our plane. But all ended well and several hours after we were in the plane. because of the time difference, there was no Saturday for us. One more thing, no jetlag for me, both to go and return, which was a good news for me.

The Trip - Day 03 ... Le Voyage - Jour 03 ...

Photobucket

Photobucket Day 03 was all about work. First in the morning, a meeting with my colleague to compare notes and recaps on the movie we saw the day before. Then, in the afternoon, it was not one but two big meetings with Disney people in their office in Burbanks. The sketch was made in-between the 2 meetings. Then, at night, we took the subway to go to Hollywood to see the famous Chinese Theater, the path of the stars, the Kodak theater and finally meet my friend David that I haven't seen it more than 8 years. He is my former boss when I worked in VtechSoft back in the end 90's. He decided to bring us to a very local and famous dinery in downtown Los Angeles. It was a good evening. The food and the chat were excellent ! Really to short. I hope to see him again, and I hope it will not be in 8 years! Then, back to the hotel for the last night...

The Trip - Day 02... Le Voyage - Jour 02...

Photobucket

Photobucket It was the day of the screening of Next year's Pixar movie. The only thing I will say about it is that this is going to be another great movie. And if I say more, they are going to have to kill me. So, we ended up wandering around the studio before arriving to the theater where it was presented. It is not completed yet, with a lot of animatics, temp voices and musics but it is really a good story. But...sssshhhhttt ! After the screening, we went to the archives where they allowed me to take few pics. You can see some props from "Enchanted", " Narnia ", some clay model for "Mulan ", the original multiplane camera for the early Disney cartoons and much more. In the afternoon, business meetings. At night, Mexican food in a restaurant near the Universal Studios Park, very close to our hotel. And then, time to go to sleep.
